Compare two PDFs and see what changed

See what changed between two versions of a PDF. Stays on your device.

Drop the two PDFs to compare

Old version first, then the new one · PDF up to 100 MB · Neither file leaves your device.

How it works

Drop the old version of a PDF and the new one. Both are read in your browser, their words are lined up in reading order, and everything that was removed or added is marked. You get three numbers — pages changed, words added, words removed — and, for every page with a change, the old page beside the new one: removed words struck through, added words underlined, with a line of context around each change. Nothing is uploaded, there is no account and no limit on pages.

When it helps

  • A rent agreement, offer letter or loan document comes back "with small corrections" — check exactly which words moved before you sign.
  • A college or exam notification is re-issued — see whether a date, fee or eligibility line changed.
  • Two drafts of a report or tender — find the edits without reading both end to end.
  • A bank or insurer sends revised terms — spot the new clauses.

Words, not pixels

The comparison is word by word, so a change in one figure ("45,000" to "50,000") shows up as exactly that one word, even when the lines around it reflow. A paragraph that moved to the next page is not counted as a change. Pictures, colours, fonts and layout are not compared — only the text.

The report

Download a plain text report that opens on any phone or computer: both file names, the three totals, and every change with a few words around it, the changed words in [square brackets]. It is easy to paste into an email or a WhatsApp message when you ask someone about a change. Hindi text comes through as Hindi.

Scans and locked files

A scanned PDF is a picture of a page, so there are no words to compare yet. The tool says which file is a scan and opens OCR PDF with that file loaded; compare the searchable PDF afterwards. A PDF with a password goes to Unlock PDF first, also on your device.

Very different files

When two files share little text, single words cannot always be matched; whole lines are marked instead, and the tool tells you so. The totals stay honest either way.

Privacy

Contracts and statements are exactly the files you should not upload to a stranger's server. Both PDFs are read and compared only on your device and are never sent to us or anyone else.

Questions people ask

How do I compare two PDF files for differences for free?

Drop the old version and the new version on this page. Every word that was removed or added is marked, page by page, and you can download a short text report. Nothing is uploaded and there is no sign-up.

Does it compare formatting, pictures or signatures?

No. It compares the text only — the words and their order. Changes to pictures, colours, fonts or layout are not detected.

Why does it say a file is a scan?

A scanned PDF is a picture of a page with no text inside. Run OCR PDF on it first to read the words, then compare the searchable PDF.

Are my contracts uploaded to compare them?

No. Both PDFs are read and compared inside your browser on your own phone or computer. They are never sent to us or anyone else.
