Repair a damaged PDF

Fix a PDF that won't open or opens wrong, and see what was damaged. Stays on your device.

PDF up to 200 MB · The file never leaves your device.

How it works

Drop the PDF that won't open. It is checked and rebuilt straight away, and the result tells you what was wrong with it, how it was fixed, and how many pages came back. A preview shows the first page; press Download to save the working copy with "-repaired" added to the name. Nothing is uploaded, there is no account and there is no limit.

Why PDFs break

Most damaged PDFs are not really broken inside — a small part of the file that tells readers where everything is has gone wrong. This happens when a download is interrupted on a weak connection, when an attachment is saved twice over, when a phone runs out of storage halfway, or when an app writes a PDF carelessly. Readers then say "the file is damaged", show blank pages, or refuse to open it, and upload portals reject it.

How it is fixed

The repair works in steps, strongest first, and stops as soon as one works. First, the file's index is rebuilt from the pieces themselves, the standard repair used by professional tools, which keeps text, links, forms and bookmarks. If that is not possible, every page that can still be read is copied into a fresh PDF, keeping its text. As a last resort, the pages are drawn by the most forgiving PDF reader available and saved as pictures, so you at least get the content back; the result says so, and OCR PDF can make those pages searchable again.

Honest about what is lost

If part of the file never arrived — a download cut off halfway — those pages simply are not in it, and no tool can bring them back. The result tells you how many pages are missing so you know to download the file again. If nothing can be recovered at all, you get a clear message instead of an empty file.

Good companions

Once it opens, Compress PDF makes it small enough for a portal, and Merge PDF joins it with other files. If the PDF asks for a password, it is locked rather than damaged: use Unlock PDF.

Privacy

The repair happens on your own device. Your document is never sent to us or anyone else.

Questions people ask

How do I fix a PDF that won't open?

Drop it on this page. It is checked and rebuilt at once; the result lists what was wrong and gives you a working copy to download.

Will I lose any content?

Usually not: most damage is in the file's index, and rebuilding it keeps everything. If part of the file is missing, the result says how many pages could not be recovered.

Why does my PDF show blank pages?

Often because the file is damaged or was not fully downloaded. Repairing rebuilds what is there; if pages are missing, download the file again.

It says the PDF is password protected. Is it damaged?

No, it is locked. Use Unlock PDF with the password instead — repair can't open locked files.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The repair runs in your browser on your own device, so the document never leaves it.
