30 KB for a face photo

30 KB is a frequent cap for the applicant photo on recruitment, scholarship and state government portals, and sometimes for a scanned ID. It is enough for a clear passport-style picture if the photo was taken well. Drop yours above; the target is already 30 KB, and you'll see the size before and after plus the new pixel size.

Light and background decide the kilobytes

People blame the compressor when a photo won't fit, but much of the file size is decided when the photo is taken:

  • Light: a photo taken in dim light is full of grain, and grain is detail the file has to store. Stand facing a window in daylight and the same photo comes out cleaner and smaller.
  • Background: a plain light wall compresses to almost nothing. Bookshelves, curtains and patterned walls cost kilobytes your face could have used — and many forms reject busy backgrounds anyway.
  • Framing: head and shoulders only. A full-body photo cropped down later has already wasted pixels on things the form doesn't want.

A good photo at 30 KB looks sharp; a dim, cluttered photo at 30 KB looks smudged. If your result looks soft, retaking the photo helps more than any setting.

Exact sizes and shapes

Many forms that cap at 30 KB also fix the shape, such as 200 × 230 pixels or 3.5 × 4.5 cm. Enter it under Exact size and more options in pixels, cm, mm or inches. If your photo is a different shape we crop from the centre; you can fit the whole photo inside a white border instead. For exam forms with rules for face size and background, the exam photo maker applies them for you.

Ranges like 20–30 KB

When a form gives a range, type the minimum too. Clean photos can land below it, and a file that is too small is rejected just like one that is too big. We keep the result inside the range.

Nothing is uploaded

Your photo is processed in your browser. Location and camera details hidden inside the file are removed from the result, and the photo itself never reaches a server. Need it smaller still? See 20 KB or 10 KB.

Questions people ask

Why does my photo look blurry at 30 KB?

Usually it was taken in dim light or in front of a busy background, which wastes the budget. Retake it facing daylight against a plain wall and it will look much sharper at the same size.

What pixel size works for 30 KB?

Around 200 × 230 to 300 × 400 pixels suits a clear face photo. If your form names a size, enter it under more options.

My form says 20–30 KB. What do I enter?

Keep 30 as the target and enter 20 as the minimum under more options. We keep the file inside that range.

Is my photo stored anywhere?

No. It is compressed in your browser and never uploaded. Hidden location data is removed from the result as well.
