How to compress

The one-megabyte line

1 MB is the classic ceiling: portal uploads, document lockers and plenty of exam attachments stop there. It is also a generous budget — almost any everyday document can live comfortably under 1 MB once it is compressed with a little care. Drop your PDF above; the 1 MB chip is preselected and the result appears with before and after sizes.

Why your PDF is over 1 MB in the first place

Nearly always: images. Scanned pages at high DPI, phone photos inserted into a document at full 12-megapixel resolution, or a presentation exported with every picture untouched. The text in a PDF is almost free; the pictures are the weight. Compression therefore means re-encoding those images at a sensible size — which is what we do, at the highest sharpness that keeps the whole file inside your limit.

Gentle first, firm when needed

At a roomy target like 1 MB it is worth trying Keep text selectable first: it compresses the images inside the PDF and leaves the text layer untouched, so links, copy-paste and screen-reader text keep working. Many office-made PDFs fit under 1 MB this way. Scanned documents usually need the default Make it under a size mode instead, which redraws pages as images and guarantees the limit. Either way, you check the first page at full size before downloading, and if a file genuinely cannot be readable under 1 MB — rare at this limit — we tell you instead of pretending.

Big files, no upload

This is where in-browser processing pays off most. A 40 MB scan would take minutes just to upload to a server tool on mobile data; here there is no upload at all. The file is compressed on your device, your data plan is spared, and the document — often a contract, report or ID bundle — never leaves your hands.

Tighter limits and other documents

Need to go lower? The same engine drives 500 KB, 200 KB and 100 KB targets. And if the upload is part of a government form, the Sarkari tools make the matching photo and signature files and check everything before you submit.

Questions people ask

How long does a big PDF take?

There is no upload, so even tens of megabytes compress in seconds on a recent phone — the work happens on your device.

Will pictures inside the PDF stay sharp?

At 1 MB, almost always. We spend the budget on the highest sharpness that fits, and you can inspect the preview at 100% before downloading.

Should I use 1 MB or a smaller target?

Use the limit your portal states. If it just says "under 1 MB", this page’s default is exactly right; going lower only costs quality you’re allowed to keep.

Is my file private?

Yes — it is processed in your browser and never uploaded. Switch off the internet after the page loads and compression still works.
